What we mean by “Big Data”

What we mean by “Big Data”

Posted by Izet Dautovic Analytics

Big data refers to the large and complex sets of data that organizations collect and analyze in order to gain insights and make data-driven decisions. It includes structured and unstructured data, such as text, images, videos, and sensor data, and can come from a variety of sources, including social media, IoT devices, and transactional systems.

The volume, variety, and velocity of big data make it challenging to store, process, and analyze using traditional data management and analytical tools. Therefore, new technologies and approaches have been developed to handle and analyze big data, such as Hadoop, Spark, and NoSQL databases.

One of the key characteristics of big data is its volume. The amount of data being generated and collected continues to grow at an unprecedented rate, and organizations are struggling to keep up with the sheer volume of data. This is why big data is often associated with the three Vs: volume, velocity, and variety.

Three V’s

The three Vs of big data refer to the key characteristics of big data that make it challenging to manage and analyze

Volume: refers to the sheer size of the data sets. Big data is often characterized by its large volume, with terabytes, petabytes, and even exabytes of data being generated and collected on a daily basis. This makes it difficult to store, process, and analyze using traditional data management and analytical tools.

Velocity: refers to the speed at which data is generated and must be processed in order to gain insights in real-time. This can be especially challenging when dealing with streaming data, such as social media feeds or sensor data. Organizations need to process and analyze data quickly in order to gain insights and make decisions in real-time.

Variety: refers to the different types of data that organizations need to manage and analyze, such as structured, unstructured, and semi-structured data. This can make it difficult to integrate data from different sources and to gain a holistic view of the data. Variety in data can also include the format of data, such as text, images, videos, audio and more.

Big data has the potential to provide organizations with valuable insights that can help them to improve their operations, gain a competitive advantage, and make better data-driven decisions. However, it also poses significant challenges, such as data privacy, security, and governance.

In summary, Big data refers to the large and complex sets of data that organizations collect and analyze in order to gain insights and make data-driven decisions. It includes structured and unstructured data, and can come from a variety of sources. The volume, velocity, and variety of big data make
